macario, I dont think raul meant this to be done in real life. my experience with raul is, when he says such things, it is to boost the morale of people with some humor and make them ignore what deserves to be ignored.
Surprisingly for a creative, one thing Raul is very good at is "mental judo." It's very difficult to win an argument against him. Not because he speaks with so much authority but because he's very sharp. To pull off such a retort to a client is not a matter of being a CD or an ECD. If your idea is founded on a truth and a concept that's very hard to refute, you've already won half the battle.

Yup,in the creative rankings of Campaign Brief Asia, Gavin Simpson is the top dog in the Philippines although those rankings shouldn't be taken at face value. They're just products of number crunching and doesn't really measure the real value of a creative's contribution.
Top dog number 2 David Guerrero loves to espouse awards, justifying their value as come-ons for advertisers to make the Philippines their regional creative hub.
The question is, has BBDO, JWT and Ogilvy(the top 3 creative agencies in the country) snagged any regional creative assignment so far?
Zilch.
None of them have ever won a cross-country pitch. I'm not even sure if any of them have ever been invited to an international creative pitch.
And here's another example of just how useless those rankings are: While it's dominated by Singapore and Bangkok-based creatives, if you look at the advertising revenues of those countries (Singapore less than $1B, Thailand $2.6B), they pale in comparison to Indonesia at $3.1B. And Indonesians are at the bottom rung of the rankings, if there are any of them in there. (The Philippines is not doing bad in fact, in spite of alarm bells being sounded that we're being clobbered by Thais and Singaporeans in attracting regional creative assignments, our yearly revenues amount to $2B, double that of Singapore and not far behind Thailand.)
Now then, what should be true measure of a creative? I'll answer that with an allegorical question.
Ever wonder why there aren't any more great ads these days in the mold of "Shh-boom," "Isang Bangka," "Sabado Nights," and Sarsi's "Bilib sila sa Pinoy?"
Coz the current generation of creatives are lazy thinkers and are being constantly blinded by awards. They see their value solely on the number of metals on their shelves. They think being creative is a matter of being clever.
Bill Bernbach (in my opinion, the greatest copywriter who ever lived) already warned against this fascination towards cleverness almost half a century ago.
"To indulge in graphic acrobatics and verbal gymnastics in NOT being creative."
And he nails it all down with this:
"Our job is to sell our clients' merchandise, not ourselves. Our job is to kill the cleverness that makes us shine instead of the product. Our job is to simplify, to tear away the unrelated, to pluck out the weeds that are smothering the product message."
Don't get me wrong, I myself crave for awards but I look at it as just a derby and not the end all and be all of being a creative.
Among the high flying creatives in the Philippines based on the Campaign Brief rankings, none have made any memorable campaign that will be remembered for decades. I repeat, none. Not Gavin, not David, not Dave Ferrer. You can't connect any groundbraking, earthshaking ad to their names. All you'll ever remember about them are their shiny metals.
That in itself is a tragedy.
A creative should be remembered for the ads he has made and not for the number of metals he has collected.
How many great films has Martin Scorsese made? How many Oscars has he won? One frigging statue.
I rest my case.
By the way, although I mentioned mostly SMB ads as being the greatest Philippine advertising has ever produced, I am not from McCann, just to make things clear.
I'm judging those ads on their own merits, regardless of who made them.
If you ask me who are the greatest creatives in the country, look up whoever thought of those SMB ads and that Sarsi ad instead of perusing the creative rankings.
I'm not entirely sure about the ads that you mentioned but I totally agree with all the other points you raised, anonymous.

As a planner, I agree completely with mr. anonymous that while we are in the business of creative ideas, it may not be the wisest thing to think that creativity is the god we serve. it's still a business and the way to succeed is through famous work, not necessarily through hardware. awards are good but they shouldn't be the be-all and end-all.

one last thought: everyone talks about how the thais and indians are putting out great work. and how did they do it? not by holding themselves up to the standards of the west...but by embracing their own culture in their work.as a result, their advertising language is distinct. almost like cuisine.
if we could just do that more as an industry, i have a feeling that we'll see better work that we can all be happy about.
To Mr. Anonymous who asked where we should place RC, here's my opinion:
RC is perhaps the most underrated ECD in the Philippines. I think his flamboyance overshadows his brilliance.
If there's one campaign that should define his career, it would be Surf.
It's an ugly, unglamorous campaign, I know. It's for a cheap laundry soap, for chrissake, what do you expect?
But to make a name out of a cheap laundry soap instead of what creatives would normally go for e.g. cool brands such as colas, beer or fashion brands, that I think is testament enough to his genius.
The fact that only Lowe Manila is the only Lowe agency in the world handling Surf (it's officially held by BBH, I think), is proof enough of just how effective the Lumen campaign is. As a result, the Philippines is the biggest Surf market in the world.
And how many Philippine campaigns have lasted more than a decade? Geez, Lumen has practically grown into a woman before our very eyes and Surf's still dominating the detergent wars against Tide.
I doubt if any of the "high-ranking" creatives in Campaign Brief can even come up with a killer idea that will last for decades.
They're just too proud to make soap-opera type commercials and really talk to "labanderas." They'd rather be buried with their metals and Lions than come up with something like Lumen.
It's something so beneath them.
Whenever they do "masa" advertising, they more often than not resort to humor as it is the only way they know how to talk to the "masa."
These "high-ranking" creatives are clever thinkers ideed. But they're not great communicators. They often justify smart, off-the-wall, subtly funny ideas to their clients by arguing that the "masa" is not stupid and they will "get" the joke.
But resorting to humor and trying to be cute whenever you do "masa" advertising IS treating the "masa" stupid.
It's the Wowowee mentality. Amuse the filthy masses and your products will surely sell.
Is there something wrong if you talk to the "masa" in a straightforward manner? Yes, your ads will probably turn out ugly and unoriginal (by Cannes standards, at least) but what if that's how the "masa" wants to be spoken to, for a change? In an intelligent, truthful, bare-bones manner?
What if the "masa" told you one day:
"Stop amusing us and tell us why we should buy your product? Quick, I have to wash clothes, clean the house, sell fish in the market, and your ads are getting in the way of Wowowee. I don't want any of your cutesy, corny jokes, just give me one powerful argument why I have to buy your product? Quick!"
Enter Lumen: "You're not being cheap when you buy Surf. You're being sensible and smart."
Ka-ching! Surf kills Tide.
I dare say Gavin, David and all the other top creative dogs are incapable of coming up with something as "easy" and predictable as Lumen.
I repeat, it's beneath them and they won't be able to sleep soundly at night if they allow themselves to come down from their Cannes pedestals.
And if worse comes to worst and a client points a gun to their heads and order them to stoop so low, they'll make sure that at least their "cheap" soap-opera commercial would still win at least best in cinematography in Cannes.
Ah, the preoccupation with Lions. It's becoming a disease already.
And as a parting shot, if you think RC is only good at cheap, "masa" advertising, let's rewind to 1999.
That year, Ayala Corporation (yes, the company owned by the numero uno de buena familia in the Philippines) invited Saatchi, BBDO, McCann, Ogilvy and Lintas to a purely creative pitch for Ayala Corporation's international print campaign. The winner will have their print work splashed across Time, Newsweek, etc.
Saatchi then was headed by Melvin. Ogilvy by Marc Lucas (the Aussie ECD). McCaan by Emily. And of course, David for BBDO.
The approvers: Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and Fernando Zobel de Ayala.
No VPs, no nosy brand managers. Just the holy trinity of Ayala Corporation.
Time given: 15 minutes for each agency. It goes without saying that there's no time to sell or post-rationalize your work. You just show the damn print ads to the Ayalas.
RC won, hands down.

Just a question. So you are against pushing the envelope?
To MJ, read carefully first. I never wrote Ogilvy and BBDO aren't doing any regional assignments. What I wrote was they never won any account yet via a cross-country pitch.
The accounts you mentioned were merely assigned to them.
Now you might again argue that it speaks volumes about their competency having snagged the assignment without a pitch.
But you know better than that. In the new era of globalization, it's all about competition.
Winning an outright pitch as against having the account handed to you on a silver platter is a far greater accomplishment and erases any doubt about your capabilities. Would any sport team want to win a championship by default?
To Medyo Maasim Lang, the comment of the SMB ads I cited as being old and outdated, well of course they are!
But is there any TV commercial or ad campaign in the last decade that is still remembered even today? Not only remembered, but somehow built a brand from scratch?
I can't remember any. But I still recall those old SMB ads. In research lingo, I'm just stating my top-of-mind choices.
Now if I'll force myself to think, maybe I'd remember McDo's "Karen" among the most recent. But apart from that, nothing really sticks in my mind.
I totally agree that this is the new era and the world changes by the second.
But all these new-fangled media i.e. mobile TV, YouTube, Facebook, Myspace (Friendster's outdated) etc., are just tools.
As creatives, we shouldn't confuse the medium with the message. Yes, the medium can be the message but it should be more the exception rather than the rule. And the reality is, internet penetration in the Philippines is only at 9% as of 2006, one of the lowest in Asia.
The fact is, majority of the population still rely on traditional media for information.
Yes, we have to move into the new reality of fast-paced, dizzying changes but the problem is, we are so cocooned in our offices and are so outward-looking that we're forgetting we're ultimately dealing with your regular Juan dela Cruz whose closest brush with technology is through a mobile phone.
The reality that's happening in cyberspace, in the US and the rest of the developed world is not the reality here.
I'm not saying let's stick to the old SMB or the Acebedo and Seiko ads that are MJ's top-of-mind. (Your old SL perhaps, MJ?)
All I'm saying is, let's get real and put more thought on the message and the people we're talking to rather than being all caught up with the new.
All these are just tools. I still maintain that the current crop of creatives are "lazy" in the sense that they are so into the execution rather than the idea. They tend to prowl the internet for what's "cool" and readily adapt what they see to their ads. They try so hard to make their ads look current and up-to-date.
But the more you try to make your execution more current and up-to-date, the more it will look dated and outmoded in just a few years.
Case in point: Blade Runner vs. The Matrix. Blade Runner still looks cool today because rather than going with the '80's idea of a sleek and clean future, it painted a dirty and decaying tomorrow. With all the talk about the environment and global warming, and living in a global village, Blade Runner still rings true more than two decades after it was made.
As for The Matrix, it really looks dated now. And to think, it only came out 8 years ago.
Same goes for the Star Wars prequels. They never really captured the magic of the original trilogy despite all the eye-candy CGI.
This propensity to get caught up in execution rather than the idea can even be gleaned in videogames.
The smash hits in Playstation 1 were rehashed for Playstation 2 but the PS2 versions paled in comparison to the originals, even though they looked sleeker and more well-rendered than the first-generation hits. Videogame critics totally thrashed the PS2 versions of the originals.
It's not the pixels. It's the gameplay, stupid.
Same goes for advertising. It's not the execution. It's the idea, stupid.

Sa mga Anonymous (thanks for correcting me, Anonywho?!) which I slighted, my apologies. I tend to sound (or read) preachy at times but I'm just ranting at the current state of advertising not only in the Philippines but everywhere else.
Though I may sound old-fashioned and clinging desperately to days of old, all I wish for is to make or see a piece of work that will really "hit you in the gut," as Bernbach would love to say.
I keep quoting Bernbach because it's undeniable; he started the creative revolution, period.
The sad thing is, he must be turning in his grave right now because of the industry's preoccupation with awards rather than doing really good, memorable work.
This is my whole point.
Bernbach, Ogilvy and Leo Burnett are remembered for their work, not for the number of metals they've won.
My LONG discussion (and rant) all started when someone pointed to the Campaign Brief rankings as a guidepost on who are the best creatives in the country.
Best creatives in terms of metals, right.
But best creatives in terms of making an actual impact on both pop culture and turning a product from a mere brand into a superbrand? That's a wide-open debate.
That's why I often start my sentences with "I think" and "in my opinion" because being in the creative industry, passing judgement is all a matter of taste.
But the bottom-bottomline is, we're all just pseudo-artists and not pure artists so artistry must have measurable results i.e. actual sales.
I know, I know advertising is just one aspect in the marketing mix but clients are spending $2B a year on our industry.
We're a big part of that marketing mix and we have a huge part to play in making a product successful.
If our industry begins measuring a creative's worth in terms of awards, we're going to churn out really clever, off-the-wall thinkers in the future who have no sense of what will make a product sell.
Small, agile agencies are cropping up with nary an award on their shelves yet they're giving the big agencies a run for their money simply because they tend to concentrate on ideas rather than just being clever.
Hell, even GMA7 and ABS-CBN are doing TVC's in-house.
As an industry, we are in danger of becoming outdated if we continue to cling to cleverness (ergo, awards)rather than embracing ideas that will move consumers and ultimately, products.
I have nothing against David G or Gavin or Dave Ferrer.
There's nothing wrong if we admire their cleverness but let's not make cleverness and oddness the basis for judging good advertising.
I'm not saying we go the way of pathetic jingle-based ads and predictable, trite and cliche storylines or premises.
The idea should be always be king.
Put the idea down pat before you even think of execution.
